Designing habits without punishing learners.

I introduced shipped streak and reward mechanics to encourage regular learning, while exploring recovery concepts for a future phase.

Learners needed a stronger reason to return consistently and turn initial lesson interest into an ongoing learning habit.

01 Retention problem

Turning first-time use into repeat behaviour.

Once the core lesson experience improved, the next challenge was retention. I looked at how learning products create momentum and studied gamified patterns used by competitors. This led to the introduction of streaks and reward systems that encouraged daily return behaviour.

Visible continuity without punishment

Visible continuity could encourage learners to return, but an unforgiving streak risked undermining the confidence the lesson experience was designed to build. Gamification needed to make genuine progress visible — not reward activity for its own sake.

Streaks, rewards and visible progress.

I introduced a gamified system designed to support daily learning behaviour, including streak mechanics, reward structures, progress markers and future-facing ideas such as streak freezes, repairs and leaderboards.

Recovery mechanics explored for a later phase

I explored recovery concepts to protect motivation after a missed day. These informed the direction but were not attributed to the measured retention uplift, which came from the shipped streak mechanics above.

05 Measurement

Firebase cohorts helped assess whether shipped streak mechanics translated into repeat behaviour beyond the first session.

06 Results and learning

Progress visibility without punishment.

Gamification was effective when it made genuine learning progress visible. The objective was not to reward activity for its own sake, but to help learners recognise continuity and maintain momentum.

The measured uplift came from shipped streak mechanics. Explored recovery concepts such as freezes and repairs informed the direction without being attributed to the result.

Stronger learning habits increased continued use, but the product also needed a sustainable way to convert that value into subscription growth.
